Jakarta, 18 October 2016 – Excessive food cravings are often the primary obstacle to maintaining a healthy diet. This condition is known as food craving, which is fundamentally different from physical hunger, as it is often triggered by emotional factors, hormonal imbalances, and biochemical processes in the body. This issue can develop into food addiction when an individual begins to lose sensitivity to the body’s natural satiety signals. Addiction to food, especially carbohydrates is uniquely complex because it involves repetitive, unconscious eating patterns that persist from morning until night.

Recognizing Body Signals and the Dangers of Food Addiction
In Indonesia, this phenomenon is often seen in addiction to processed carbohydrates, where people are accustomed to consuming rice with noodles, potatoes, fried snacks, and sweet tea. At the Jakarta Food Editor’s Club (JFEC) Gathering supported by Unilever, dr. Grace Judio explained that the main characteristic of addiction is the loss of control over actual eating functions. Eating is no longer about fulfilling energy needs, instead, it shifts into a chemical dependency on substances like sugar and flour. dr. Grace also warned that if this excess calorie intake continues to accumulate without being burned optimally, there is a risk of serious health problems such as diabetes and hypertension.
Steps Towards a Healthy Diet
As a solution, dr. Grace encourages individuals to rebuild self-awareness when choosing nutritional intake. Regulating meal portions according to needs and limiting sugar, salt, and fat (SSF) intake are very important first steps in breaking the chain of addiction. Another step that can be taken is to learn to consume food in moderation and not use it solely as an emotional escape. With a supportive environment and a solid understanding of nutrition, we can maintain daily productivity, stay fit, and protect ourselves from chronic diseases in the future.
