Health Talk with dr Grace: Lifestyle Phenomena and the Causes of Obesity in Indonesia

Jakarta, 11 March 2026 – Many people are still unaware that daily habits and local culture in Indonesia play a major role in determining physical health. This topic was discussed in the talk show Farhan in the Morning on Delta FM, “Body & Soul,” featuring dr. Grace Judio Kahl, Msc, MH, CHt. During the discussion, dr. Grace highlighted several unique phenomena in Indonesia that often, without realization, become key contributors to obesity.

Food as Souvenirs and a Symbol of Affection
One lifestyle phenomenon in Indonesia is the strong culture of souvenirs. Souvenir shops are almost always associated with food or regional snacks. This tradition makes travel or holidays frequently accompanied by excessive food consumption.

In addition, food is often used as a symbol of love and affection. Giving chocolate to a partner or promising food as a reward for a child’s achievement has shaped a mindset that happiness should be celebrated with high-calorie intake. According to dr. Grace, understanding the emotional connection between food and affection is a crucial first step in preventing the risk of obesity.

Prosperity Stigma and the Challenges of Dieting
Another contributing factor is the social stigma related to body shape. There is still a perception that a protruding belly represents prosperity or a well-established life. This mindset can lead people to neglect waistline management, even though internal organ health should remain a top priority.

Challenges also arise when someone wants to start dieting. dr. Grace observed that many people feel reluctant to admit they are dieting because they fear being judged by their social environment.

“It is often easier to say I am dieting because of illness, as instructed by a doctor, rather than saying I am dieting to lose weight,” said dr. Grace.

This talk show served as a reminder that simple steps to prevent obesity begin with awareness of one’s own lifestyle. By responding more wisely to eating culture and existing social stigma, individuals can protect their long-term health.
